Interview with NY designer Rachel Roy
New York designer Rachel Roy stopped by the Macy’s Boca Raton to host a RACHEL Rachel Roy trunk show for her latest collaboration with professional surfer, Karina Petroni. The capsule footwear collection includes a wedge, espadrille and a high top that reflect Karina’s free spirited and fun surfer vibe mixed with Rachel’s downtown city style. Rachel picks really interesting collaborators for her Macy’s capsule collections, she has worked with Estelle, Jessica Stam and now, Karina Petroni.
I had the chance to ask both ladies a few questions about the collection and collabo…click click to read. xx
AD: Why did you decide to collaborate with a different celebrity each season?
RR: With my secondary collection with Macy’s I design jewelry, handbags, shoes and clothes for so many types of women so I collaborate with different artists each season to stay inspired.
AD: Fun. What made you choose professional surfer, Karina Petroni?
RR: I discovered Karina after watching her in the movie The Cove. It was really informative, uplifting and empowering. I talked to my team about working with her and when I met her I loved her lifestyle and her strength as a person. I have a fear of open water and its something that she has conquered, so it was inspiring. I was drawn to both her strength and the Bohemian type lifestyle she represents in the truest sense. I grew up in Monterey, California, so despite my life in New York I have sort of a Bohemian sense of style at heart.
AD: How was your experience working in fashion and with Rachel?
KP: It was so great to get the chance to go to New York and sit down at a table with all these incredible, independent women and learn about fashion, and the behind-the-scenes aspect of the clothes we wear, the art of fashion.
AD: What was important for you when helping to design the collection?
KP: For me versatility is important and the mix of my bohemian style with Rachel’s high fashion. A natural mix of grassroots and city life that is accessible to everyone.
AD: I agree. I think the line is very accessible and definitely in line with South Florida style.
