Alaïa, Master of the Female Form?
The NY Times published this Azzedine Alaïa article naming him the master of the female form and it’s an interesting read. I don’t agree with naming one person the “master” of designing for the female form, too subjective and more a matter of opinion.
That aside, I learned a lot about Alaïa and his current position in the fashion world and why, perhaps, his name isn’t as commercially recognizable as other designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Alber Elbaz, Phillip Lim, etc.
It’s easier to look at Azzedine’s place in the fashion world than to explain it.
*PS. Remember the Alaïa line from Clueless where Cher gets robbed at gun point after the valley party? Brilliant.
Robber: Get on the ground and count to 100.
Cher: Oh, no. You don’t understand this is an Alaïa.
Robber: An a-what-a?
Cher: It’s like a totally important designer.
Robber: And I will totally shoot you in the head. Get down!
