Suburbia
David is really inspired by the South Florida suburbs. I tend to think it’s a predictable and kinda boring location – I grew up in one.
I finally caved and decided I should give it more of a chance. I’ve definitely seen an increase in high-fashion editorials shot in suburban-type locations, I know it’s a thing. One in particular from last summer had me really inspired, shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde And Vinoodh Matadin for Vogue Paris August 2011, you can view here. It’s interesting because while looking up this spread to link to for readers, I realized just how much the Vogue Paris shoot had set into my subconscious. A year ago, I saved a few of the spread’s images to my inspiration board and haven’t looked at them since. Now, looking at our final images and the Vogue spread together, I can clearly see the influences.
David and I scouted suburban locations up in North Miami a few weeks ago, and I’d spent the time since trying to think of how I could style the shoot and get excited for it. Playing off my recent faux precious stone obsession, the direction started to take a real housewife angle. I love pairing glam wardrobe in a mundane manner. I adore the way it turned out. Thank-you, David for pushing me on this story!
