Wrong Turn

Here are the second set of photos from our trip to Jimbo’s place over the weekend. I really like this look and these shots were part of the the original plan or inspiration for this location. David works on Key Biscayne and he had taken a few trips out to Jimbo’s previously. He told me about this amazing path with really tall grass that he thought I would like, once I saw it on Saturday I knew that it was a good chance to do something weird.

I love the idea of mixing high fashion in a more low brow location. I wanted to make it extra “off” so I picked out the most glamourous dress I could find, this Haute Hippe golden sequin dress to fit the style profile perfectly. My new Steve Madden’s and a simple black choker finished the look off, nicely.

Also, David got a good shot of Jimbo’s son working on his Benz at 7 am. xx

Dress, Haute Hippie Sequin Dress available at Jessie Boutique. Shoes, Steve Madden Gretta Platform.

Big City Dreaming

David and I shot these on Sunday morning at Jimbo’s Place on Virginia key in Miami. The “smoked fish house” is a really popular spot for photographers and film crews and was shot on location in Ace Ventura, True Lies, Miami Vice, Wild Things, CSI Miami and others. The 1980 horror film Island Claws filmed at Jimbo’s and built shacks that are still there. I say “smoked fish house” because when I was there, I didn’t see any fish, and I got the feeling its more of “sometimes there is some fish and you can buy it” kind of place.

David brought me to Jimbo’s on Saturday to check out the location and pick out some scenes. It was the most random group of people listening to music, drinking $2 beer and playing bocce ball. There is also yellow school bus that is home to about 30 cats. Jimbo’s is definitely something to see if your ever in Miami.

Going back to Jimbo’s on Sunday morning to shoot, we got there at about 6:30 am. Jimbo’s son was still awake and graciously gave me bug spray for the swarming pests everywhere near the water. He told David that Dan Marino was there the night before…..

On another note, lets talk about the dress. Oh my gaw I love it SO HARD. It’s by my current obsession, Miami-based designer brand Alexis. I actually got the chance to meet the mother-daughter team last Friday for an interview at their incredible showroom and warehouse. I’m writing the article today, so lookout for that tomorrow, along with more pics from Jimbo’s. xx

Dress, Alexis available at Jessie Boutique. Shoes, Steve Madden Gretta Platform. Belt, BCBG. Lip color, MAC Lady Danger.

Deco Darling

Here I go channeling Josephine Baker and one of my favorite style periods, Art Deco. This shoot has been in the back of my mind for about a month now, and I’m super pumped to bring you the result. These first two looks were mainly inspired by Jo Baker and the amazeballs TUSH magazine shoot (here) I mentioned in the trend report below.

This shoot was our first real experiment with the new strobe light and there were some other new factors in this shoot too. My CaptureFashion team was missing my mane man Sheenon Olson because he was busy being fabulous in LA, and my usual makeup guru Ian Glending was busy at MAC. Thankfully, I had my friend Gina Rum with me to step in and do my hair and makeup. Gina is actually my new intern and will be helping me with PR and assisting on big shoots, so look out for her in the behind the scenes video coming up Wednesday.

The makeup for this was actually really intense. Thinking back, I was kinda crazy to attempt it without a professional and no test run. Things have a way of working out though, a couple of youtube tutorials on covering up eyebrows and a fresh glue stick put us on track. Big thanks to Gina for being awesome and going for it. xx

Inspiration – Josephine Baker

Style Icon Josephine Baker has been a heavy source of inspiration for me lately. The African-American performer became famous after performing in a banana skirt at the Folies Bergere in Paris. By mid 1926 she was believed to be the most photographed woman in the world. Dolls of her in the infamous banana skirt were sold in thousands and the banana became a symbol of emancipation and empowerment.

Recently, it seems as if Baker’s style influence has been popping up everywhere. For Prada’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection, Miuccia Prada drew on Jo Baker’s imagery with those banana print skirts and finger wave hairstyle. And even more recently, photographer Ellen von Unwerth shot the most incredible spread in homage to the icon.

I first saw images of the TUSH magazine editorial about a month ago and have obsessed over it almost daily ever since. Model Rose Cordero is flawless in the entire spread and the styling is spot on. Click here to check out all the images from “Adore Me” in Tush’s issue #24 and stay tuned for my interpretation of Jo Baker’s style…coming up next! xx

Here we go with the behind-the-scenes video for last weeks’ Swim Week style posts. This was our first attempt at doing studio photography because of the incessant July rain in Miami. Take a look and check out my apartment, the glam process and my awesome team.

Can’t believe this is the fourth video. Crazy.com
